Seoul starts to wear masks as epidemic intensifies

Seoul, South Korea’s capital, has forced people to wear masks since the 24th to curb the rapid spread of the new coronavirus in Seoul and its surrounding areas.

According to the “mask order” issued by the Seoul municipal government, all citizens must wear masks in indoor and crowded outdoor places and can only be removed when eating, Yonhap reported.

In early May, a cluster of infections occurred in Litai hospital, a city where nightclubs are concentrated, prompting the government to require people to wear masks on buses, taxis and subways from mid May.

Acting mayor of Seoul, Xu Zhengxie, said at a press conference on the 23rd that he hoped to remind all residents that “wearing masks is the basis for maintaining safety in daily life”. North Chung Ching road and Gyeonggi province near Seoul also issued administrative orders to force residents to wear masks.

The number of newly diagnosed cases in South Korea’s capital circle has surged recently due to a cluster infection in a church in Seoul. More than 1000 new confirmed cases were reported in Seoul from January 15 to 22, while there were about 1800 confirmed cases in Seoul since South Korea reported its first case on January 20 to 14 this month, according to government data.

The Associated Press reported that 397 new confirmed cases were reported in South Korea on the 23rd, and the new cases have remained in the triple digits for 10 consecutive days.
