What kind of mask can be worn for prevention and control?

Recently, the Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention of the National Health Commission issued the “Guidelines for the Use of Pneumonia Masks for the Prevention of Novel Coronavirus Infection”, which responded in detail to a series of issues that the public should pay attention to when wearing masks.

The “Guide” points out that masks are an important line of defense to prevent respiratory infectious diseases and can reduce the risk of new coronavirus infection. Masks can not only prevent the patient from spraying droplets, reduce the amount and speed of droplets, but also block virus-containing droplet nuclei and prevent the wearer from inhaling.

Common masks mainly include ordinary masks (such as paper masks, activated carbon masks, cotton masks, sponge masks, gauze masks, etc.), disposable medical masks, medical surgical masks, medical protective masks, KN95/N95 and above particulate protective masks.

Disposable medical masks: It is recommended that the public use them in non-crowded public places.

Medical surgical masks: The protective effect is better than disposable medical masks. It is recommended to wear them during their on-duty period, such as suspected cases, public transportation personnel, taxi drivers, sanitation workers, and public place service personnel.

KN95/N95 and above particulate protective mask: The protective effect is better than that of medical surgical masks and disposable medical masks. It is recommended for on-site investigation, sampling and testing personnel. The public can also wear them in highly crowded places or closed public places.

How to choose the right mask?

 1. Mask type and protective effect: medical protective mask> medical surgical mask> ordinary medical mask> ordinary mask

2. Ordinary masks (such as cotton cloth, sponge, activated carbon, gauze) can only prevent dust and haze, but cannot prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.

3. Ordinary medical masks: can be used in non-crowded public places.

4. Medical surgical masks: The protective effect is better than ordinary medical masks and can be worn in crowded places in public places.

5. Medical protective masks (N95/KN95): used by front-line medical staff when contacting patients with confirmed or suspected new coronary pneumonia, fever clinics, on-site survey sampling and testing personnel, and can also be worn in densely populated places or closed public places.

6. Regarding the protection of the recent novel coronavirus pneumonia, medical masks should be used instead of ordinary cotton, gauze, activated carbon and other masks.
